Finding happiness following a divorce

On Behalf of | Apr 13, 2023 | Family Law |

The process of ending your marriage is one of the most mentally and emotionally taxing things that many Oklahoma residents ever face. While the process of grieving the end of a marriage is difficult, there is life after divorce.

Embracing emotions

Many people incorrectly assume that emotionally healthy people are those who bottle up their emotions so that no one sees them in a moment of weakness. Mental health professionals agree that this is simply not the case. Instead, recognize your emotions and embrace them. However, those emotions should only be expressed in healthy ways instead of turning to unhealthy options.

Find a support group

Some people find support groups that focus on helping people deal with divorce to be helpful. Many people find it easier to open up to people they don’t know personally. Being connected to a community of people dealing with the same pain provides you with a safe place to share your feelings and helps you realize that you are not alone.

Establish goals

A divorce can force people to reevaluate where they are in life. For many people, being 50% of a married couple defines who they are. Now that you’re on your own, it could be a good idea to set some goals for yourself following a divorce. Learning how to play an instrument, getting in better shape or taking a class are wonderful options. Setting goals and seeing them come to fruition allows you to experience a sense of accomplishment as you embrace your next chapter.

Even the most amicable divorces leave people with feelings of uncertainty. Taking some steps to protect your mental and emotional well-being is crucial.
