Is your marriage heading toward divorce?

Your wedding day was filled with excitement, happiness and love. When you exchanged vows, you meant every word. Now that you’ve been married for years, you sense that something has changed. You find yourself wondering if your marriage is headed toward divorce.

There are many things that can stress a marriage to the point of breaking. Couples may drift apart because of challenges such as trust violations or a lack of communication. If you are experiencing either of these issues, you may be facing an impending divorce.

Signs that your marriage is in trouble

No one can say with certainty why couples grow apart. It just happens over time. Some signs that your marriage could be over include the following:

  • There’s a lack of intimacy. The two of you used to be very attracted to each other, but that feeling is no longer present. Instead of living like you’re in love, you live like platonic roommates.
  • You avoid each other. You may stay late at work or go out with the girls to avoid spending time with your spouse. There’s a feeling of detachment between you, and you’re not interested in fixing it.
  • You are indifferent to each other’s feelings. When you try to talk about how you feel, your spouse shuts down. No amount of coaxing can get them to take an interest in what’s upsetting you.
  • You keep things from each other. You may want to spend money on something, but you’re afraid of how your spouse will react. To avoid conflict, you use your “secret” credit card that your spouse knows nothing about.

Healthy marriages are based on open and honest communication and transparency. When one or both spouses stray from these basic tenets, it does not bode well for their marriage. If you are considering divorce, it’s smart to seek legal guidance to help you better prepare if you decide to move forward with it.
