Why do later marriages lead to a lower divorce rate?

Studies often find that young marriages have a higher divorce rate. For example, researchers have determined that the odds of divorce drop by 11% for each year after someone turns 18. This trend continues until age 32 when divorce rates are at their lowest. After that, the odds begin to increase again by 5% per year.

But why does getting married at 32 result in a more stable marriage? And why does marrying at a younger age increase the chances of divorce?

Growth and development

One key reason is that young people are still growing and changing. A person’s brain doesn’t fully develop until around age 25.

As a result, some couples find that they grow in different directions. They may no longer feel as compatible as they did in their teenage years. Their personalities may change, they may develop different life goals and they may decide they want different types of relationships. Someone who waits until 32 has already experienced these stages of personal growth and is more likely to choose a partner who is well-suited to them.

Financial security

Another factor is financial stress, which can be especially challenging for young couples. For example, someone who gets married at 18 may struggle with the financial realities of starting a life together. They are likely working entry-level jobs, may still be pursuing education and haven’t advanced far in their careers. These financial challenges can create a significant strain on a relationship, contributing to its breakdown.

Your options during divorce

Of course, divorce can happen at any age. If you and your partner are considering ending your marriage, take the time to explore all of your legal options.
