Can depression lead to divorce?

On Behalf of | Oct 6, 2022 | Family Law |

Depression is a serious mental illness that can lead to a number of negative consequences for Oklahoma residents, one of which is divorce. If you suspect that you or your spouse is suffering from depression, there are certain things you need to know.

Signs of depression

Usually, the first sign that something is wrong is a change in behavior. If your spouse becomes withdrawn, doesn’t want to participate in activities they used to enjoy or seems generally angry and unhappy, these could be signs of depression.

Another sign of depression is a change in sleeping patterns. You may be having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or you may find that you’re sleeping more than usual. Depression can also cause a change in appetite, so you may lose weight or gain weight.

Last but not least, you may notice that your sex life changes when you are depressed. You may have less interest in sex, or your performance may suffer. All of these changes can put a strain on your marriage.

How then do these issues lead to divorce?

For one, the symptoms of depression can make it difficult to communicate with your spouse. When you’re depressed, you may not want to talk about what’s going on, and this can lead to misunderstandings and, later on, divorce.

Depression can make it hard to compromise, which is an essential part of any marriage. If you’re depressed, you may find that you’re emotionally withdrawn, or you may experience mood swings that can make it difficult to work through problems.

If you think you or your spouse may be suffering from depression, it’s important to seek help. Depression is a treatable illness, and there are many resources available to help you. With treatment, you have a chance of getting back on track and saving your marriage.
