What types of injuries are common at daycare in the summer?

Your kids are happy to have a summer break from school, but you need to find somewhere safe for them to go while you are at work.

You think daycare is safe, but accidents can still occur. Here are some injuries to look out for when your child is at daycare this summer.

Head injuries

Head injuries occur when a child suffers a blow or jerk to the head. These injuries include concussions and traumatic brain injuries. Head injuries can leave lasting damage to a child. Your child could suffer a head trauma while playing on playground equipment or falling inside. If your child’s behavior is off when you pick them up, you want to check with the facility and your child to see if they had an accident during the day.

Drowning

Incidents of drowning in children increase during the summer. If you take your child to a facility that has a pool or takes the kids swimming, you want to make sure that all necessary safeguards are in place to protect the participants.

Broken or dislocated bones

Injuries involving a broken or dislocated bone often occur while a child is using playground equipment. During the summer, daycare facilities make greater use of outdoor recreation for children. This increases the potential for injury. You should ask to see the playground area to make sure that there are no obvious hazards.

When deciding on a daycare facility for your child, you should ask about the safety record of the establishment. You can also check ratings online with Oklahoma Child Care Services.
