Can a back injury throw off the trajectory of your life?

You may think a back injury is a relatively easy thing to recover from. However, back pain actually makes up the biggest reason that people miss out on work across the globe.

But a back injury can do more than simply affect your work. It can affect your entire life in major ways.

Increased expenses and decreased income

Cleveland Clinic discusses how back injuries impact workers. First, many workers will have to take some time away from the job in order to recover properly. This can pose a problem right from the start, as many workers do not have paid time off and have to take unpaid leave.

While this is normally difficult enough, it is an even bigger problem in the event that a worker has to pay medical expenses for the back injury at the same time. Some may need stronger prescription pain killers. Others might need physical therapy or even surgery to help with the initial injury and aftermath.

Decreases in quality of life

But back pain can persist and evade a victim’s life in other ways, too. In fact, many people who suffer from back pain will also suffer from an increased rate of anxiety or depression. Chronic pain in general has a notable and well-documented effect on a person’s overall quality of life.

With quality of life decreasing, it can become even harder to care for a back injury properly and get settled back into the rhythm of working as the injury heals. It can make dealing with medical expenses even harder on an emotional level, too. This is why it is important for back injury victims to treat the injury seriously, have a strong support network, and get treatment immediately.
